5 Tips for Having a Satisfying Career

Guided migration to a different cloud vendor and process optimization.

It’s been said more than once: “Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” (Confucius, 1989). Considering the amount of time you spend at work, your job should be one that brings you a sense of fulfillment, balance, and happiness. The reality is, at the end of the day, any career will have its ups and downs. So, giving what you do—or want to do—some purposeful consideration is worthwhile. Here are 5 ways you can chart your own career satisfaction.

1. Know Yourself

Before you settle on a career that you’re interested in now, think about your interest level in that same career 10 years from now. Take a deep dive not only into the job responsibilities, earning potential, qualifications, and employment outlook for a particular field, but also take an inventory of your own values, personality traits, aptitudes, and interests to consider whether or not a job will meet your expectations well past the honeymoon phase.

2. Buck the Trends

Just because a particular field is “hot” right now—or maybe it even has a fantastic long-term outlook—if it’s not something that you are attracted to, listen to your instincts. Choosing a career is a tough decision for some, but it’s also a personal one that affects much more than just the amount of a paycheck for years to come.

3. Change if You Want To

Maybe you did your homework, put in the time, and asked the right questions, but you still ended up in a job that doesn’t meet your expectations and you feel trapped. That happens. Instead of dragging yourself into a place that’s no longer satisfying, it’s time to move on. The worst thing you can do for your career is stay “stuck”.

4. Define YOUR Success

For some it’s the financial rewards; for others it’s the status of a corner office in the C-suite. And then there are the intangible markers of success like feeling appreciated, being part of a great team, or having the flexibility to make it home in time to for dinner with the family. Don’t let anyone else define what success looks like for you.

5. Seek Out a Mentor

Whether you’ve been in a job for a month or three years, or you are just now considering a career in a specific field, there is always more to learn. It’s wise to seek out a colleague or other peer to help guide you in your career. Everyone makes mistakes along their journey and having someone who can share how to learn from those mistakes is a gift.
