Azure Monitor Alert

A quick guide to make the best of your monitoring journey!

Guided migration to a different cloud vendor and process optimization.

In the Azure Monitor space, alerts will proactively notify you of important data or patterns identified in your monitoring data. Implementing an alerting strategy defines your organizations standards for the types of alert rules that you will create for different scenarios, how you will manage alerts after they are created, and define the automated actions you will take in response to alerts.

There are 3 things that need to be defined to setup an Azure Monitor Alert:

1. Define what you want to alert on

Below we will go into these with an example for All Virtual Machines in East US for a Subscription:

Define what to alert on: All Virtual Machines (in East US) for Subscription (Contoso Hotels – Dev).

  • Include all future resources. This makes it ‘auto-scaling’.
  • Note: This monitor is for ‘East US’ region, the performance metrics are separated by region.

2. Setup a condition that needs to be alerted

Must choose between Metric or Log Based alert; chose Metric in this case:

Specified: Whenever the percentage CPU is greater or less than dynamic threshold.

Get an option for ‘Static’ or ‘Dynamic’ threshold. Chose Dynamic threshold which is the best practice for deploying alerts at scale.

  • Do not have to worry about Static Thresholds. All the VMs in the environment will have their own highly customizable minimum and maximum threshold setup according to their sensitivity levels.
  • If there is a regular spike in VM performance, and if that is the natural behavior, then it is no longer considered an anomaly.

3. Define what actions need to be taken

Now that the condition is setup, we need to create an action group:

  • Compilation of different action types can select Run Books, Functions, Logic Apps, or even simple notifications.
  • Could also setup auto-scaling to grow environments elastically based on need (VM Scale Sets or App Services).

More great resources!
Finally, here we share additional resources to help you on your Azure Monitoring Journey:

  • What can you monitor (Azure Supported Services)
  • Cloud Models Monitor – Azure Cloud Monitoring
  • Response – Alerting
  • Alerts and Automated Actions – Alert Rules at Scale

As you can see there is a lot that goes into enabling the necessary monitoring. But keep in mind, you are not in it alone. Tridius is here to help you every step of the way! From setting up custom monitoring, to fully managing your Azure environment, we are ready to assist with your monitoring needs.
