How to only enable necessary monitoring?

Guided migration to a different cloud vendor and process optimization.

Azure Monitor helps you maximize the availability and performance of your applications and services by delivering a comprehensive solution for collecting, analyzing, and acting on telemetry from your cloud and on-premises environments.

At Tridius, we can help you understand how your applications are performing and proactively identify issues affecting them and the resources they depend on. We are a Microsoft Gold Partner that specializes in servicing the Azure space, to assist with maintaining the most up to date Azure configuration, security, and of course, monitoring.

Have a plan!

When planning your Azure Monitoring journey, we need to understand questions like the following: What should be monitored and who should be notified to fulfill our monitoring strategy? What is the SLA, Latency, and Urgency Consideration? What type of Data Privacy, Retention, Residency, and Compliance Requirements do we have?

A general guidance to alerting strategy stems from clarifying if it matters, urgency and who and what will be affected. Once we understand these items, we can start building a general strategy. Below we share an outline of the next few phases of our Azure Monitoring journey:

1. Designing the Monitoring Architecture

  • Designing your log analytics workspaces: setup Log Analytics Workspaces using as few workspaces as possible unless there are specific organizational requirements or geographical data sovereignty constraints
  • Security & Audit Logs: Variable data retention should be used if some data is needed longer
  • Decide whether to use separate or single Application Insights Resource for your scenario
  • Decide network configurations to monitor Firewalled/Intranet Resources

2. Onboarding at Scale:

Enable Agent Deployment, Infrastructure Insights & Diagnostics Settings:

  • Understand the differences in Azure Diagnostics Extensions and Agents
  • Configure Diagnostics Settings to collect & route logs from Azure Platform Resources
  • Automate agent deployment, insights enablement and diagnostic setting configurations across resources via: Azure Automation DSC; Azure CLI/PowerShell; Azure ARM Templates; Azure Policy
  • Enable Application & Microservices Monitoring
  • Codeless attach for apps on Azure app services, Azure VMs, and Azure Kubernetes services (AKS)
  • Status Monitor: Application Insights Agent for Apps on On-Premises Windows Server or VMs
  • Integrate with Release Management via Azure DevOps Projects or Azure DevOps Pipelines

3. Automation Actions & Remediations:

There are 3 things that need to be defined to setup an Azure Monitor Alert:

  • Define what you want to alert on
  • Setup a condition that needs to be alerted
  • Define what actions need to be taken

4. Optimizing Implementations & Diagnostics:

This is when Microsoft recommends focusing on Optimizing for Cost. They also provide some recommendations to Collect & Retain only as much data as you need.

  • Review configuration settings to reduce frequency of data collection and only collect required logs
  • Setup appropriate data caps to avoid anomalous spikes / bill shocks and configure data cap alerts to avoid losing data
  • Use sampling to reduce number of telemetry items that are sent from your apps.
  • Setting lower retention on selected data types can be used to reduce your data costs and leverage reserved capacity pricing when appropriate for lower costs
  • Evaluate recommendations from Azure Advisor to help optimize Availability, Security, Performance & Cost

5. Communicating & Collaboration

  • Monitoring Reader or Monitoring Contributor roles can grant access to monitoring data while restricting broader access.
  • Central teams can access all logs with Workspace Access, while individual teams might just be given Resource access
  • Access to sensitive data like debug snapshots can be restricted further with specific roles
  • Drive collaboration with monitoring as part of DevOps/SRE tools & processes using Azure Logic App to automate various workflows integrations from Alerts such as Work Items and ChatOps
  • Integrate Alerts as part of Pre/Post Deployment Quality Gates in Azure DevOps Pipelines
  • Access Production Telemetry directly within Visual Studio for Debugging & Diagnostics

List of Rewards! Quest Turn In

By implementing a plan for monitoring we can understand what should be monitored, who should be notified, and how resources are organized to fully manage your Azure environment.

As you can see there is a lot that goes into enabling the necessary monitoring. But keep in mind, you are not in it alone. Tridius is here to help you every step of the way! We have plenty of relevant resources to get you started. Let Tridius inspire your team to innovate solutions that improve your Azure Monitoring Journey.
