Microsoft Server Product Lifecycle

What you need to know (2022)

Microsoft Server Product Lifecycle improves weak security

With everything going on in your IT world, you need to be intentional about upgrading your servers and migrating their workloads. However, navigating the Microsoft Server Product Lifecycle can be a challenge. This article covers all server OSs that have expired their extended support date or will be expiring in the next year.

Microsoft has two product lifecycle policies; Fixed and Modern. Windows Server is governed by the fixed lifecycle policy.

The Fixed Lifecycle Policy applies to many commercial and some consumer products currently available through retail purchase and/or volume licensing. It provides:

  • A defined support and servicing Lifecycle timeline at the time of product launch.
  • A minimum of five years Mainstream Support.
  • An additional period of Extended Support for some products.

Mainstream Support is the first phase of the product lifecycle. At the end of the Mainstream Support End Date, this support is no longer available. At the supported service pack level, Mainstream Support for products and services includes:

  • Incident support (no-charge incident support, paid incident support, support charged on an hourly basis, support for warranty claims)
  • Security update support
  • The ability to request non-security updates

The Extended Support phase follows Mainstream Support. At the end of the Extended Support End Date, this support is no longer available. At the supported service pack level, Extended Support includes:

  • Paid support
  • Security updates at no additional cost

Why is this important?

Microsoft is committed to providing products with improved security. Even though Microsoft strives to remove vulnerabilities during development, software vulnerabilities remain a fact today and we must be prepared to respond when they are discovered. Tridius recommends that customers install the latest product releases, security updates, and service packs to remain as secure as possible. This important IT task will help to maintain the security and stability of your environment to help protect your important data from being compromised.
